About the Role:
We are seeking a Senior Product Counsel to join the growing Product Legal team to meet the expanding needs of our company and our customers. In this role, you will be (a) empowering a team of legal and compliance professionals focused on building and maintaining a comprehensive HR rules set that will enable bespoke compliance experience across Gusto’s suite of products; (b) advising the business as it builds world-class, HR-related product experiences for Gusto customers; and (c) serving as a subject matter expert for the product legal and compliance teams on complex HR legal questions. Gusto’s Legal & Compliance team partners with product teams to enable innovation, facilitate responsible company growth, accelerate the Gusto roadmap, and provide compliant products to our customers, through solution-focused counsel on legal and business risks. Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Counsel the product, engineering, and design teams on a range of issues including employment compliance, wage & hour, employee benefits, marketing, data privacy, and AI use.
- Advise on complex regulatory frameworks to design or enhance innovative and regulated B2B and B2C products and services that support the HR and compliance needs of small businesses.
- Contribute to our product suite from brainstorm and ideation through launch.
- Contribute to key initiatives helping to mature our Legal & Compliance team’s functions.
- Empower legal and compliance individuals focused on strategic HR product initiatives.
Here’s what we're looking for:
- JD degree and active license to practice law (member of a State Bar).
- 10+ years of legal experience, including in-house work at a tech company, with a focus on employment law.
- Experience providing pragmatic legal guidance on tech products.
- Strong problem-solving skills balancing legal risk with business needs.
- Collaborative and able to thrive under pressure in cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus and foster strong relationships.
- Eagerness to dive in and drive projects independently.
- Interest in how technology can improve HR processes and reduce pain points.
- Attention to detail and follow-through in a fast-paced environment.
Our cash compensation amount for this role is $198,000 to $246,000 in Denver & most major metro locations, and $221,000 to $273,000 for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
