Product Management at hyperexponential
Our Technology department is a melting pot of some of the brightest (and kindest!) engineers and product managers in the industry.
The level of complexity of hx Renew requires a highly technical, true engineering mindset so an output of this is a deeply creative, innovative environment where we push the technological boundaries of what’s possible.
You will report to the Product Lead, and work closely with a product engineering team. We always have more hard product problems than we have time to solve so this is a position with plenty of growth opportunity as we continue to expand!
Your Mission
We need a technically-minded Product Manager with engineering experience to take ownership of our Models domain, managing the experience actuaries provide to underwriters though their model building activities in our core product, hx Renew. You’ll continually expand what our users can achieve with hx Renew’s modelling capability.
That means some really interesting challenges that will require strong platform thinking. You’ll need to balance creating components, which are easy for actuaries developing on our platform to work with, but which provide a high-quality experience for underwriters! There will be some big technical challenges, and while we have some ideas about how we can raise the bar of what’s possible, there’s plenty of room for you to make your own mark and help us set the gold standard for a best-in class modelling experience.
What You’ll Do
Note: hx is still a relatively early-stage business, and our culture prizes initiative highly - as such this section is a good indicator of your role, but the list isn’t exhaustive.
Own and evolve one of the most complex parts of our platform—the foundation that allows users to build and manage flexible pricing models. You’ll design new components and capabilities with a sharp eye on how they integrate and interact with other components and capabilities across the platform. This might be new widgets for models, new ways to execute models, or new ways to interact with models.
Balance flexibility with guardrails. You’ll work at the intersection of customisability and control, designing components and capabilities that accommodate diverse customer needs while preventing misuse, edge-case chaos, or brittle configurations.
Drive platform abstraction. You’ll listen to bespoke customer requests and distill them into reusable, generalised patterns—building frameworks and primitives that scale across many use cases without ballooning complexity. A recent challenge was taking feedback on the need for bespoke components and instead developing a framework for customers to build their own.
Make hard trade-offs thoughtfully. You’ll be constantly weighing the tension between ideal design and practical delivery, considering long-term maintainability, performance, usability, and risk at every turn.
Ensure safe evolution. Backward and forward compatibility will be front of mind as you lead migrations, sunset legacy components, and introduce change with minimal disruption to our customers.
Collaborate deeply with engineers. You won’t be contributing to the codebase, but you’ll be expected to dive into discussions on product architecture, data modelling, system boundaries, and failure states. Your background in engineering will help you thrive in these conversations.
Tame complexity without limiting capability. You’ll make it easier for new users to get started easily (e.g. templates or defaults), while continuing to support power users pushing the limits of what’s possible (e.g. enabling them to run the same model in different ways).
Experience & Skills
hx is far less interested in counting years over evidence of delivery, and our requirements reflect this.
You’ll have experience:
Understanding and representing your users’ needs - creating personas and mapping user journeys.
Understanding problems and opportunities through analysing data, user research, competitor analysis running experiments, and interactions with the business.
Delivering against a wider product vision, strategy and roadmap - executing alongside a cross-functional end-to-end product team.
Planning how best to approach delivering maximum impact both within a sprint and over the longer term using the resources available.
Co-ordinating across customers and the business to deliver from idea to implementation to launch - communicating the value to users throughout the process.
Creating and managing a backlog, balancing strategic, customer, and internal work.
Working iteratively, using data to assess and refine your decisions.
Being responsible for the overall user experience of your domain.
The right person for this role will need:
Past experience in a software engineering role.
Past experience building software for software builders.
Proven experience working as a Product Manager with a track record of successful product delivery in technical products (ideally at a fast-scaling B2B SaaS company).
Proven ability to design and define core abstractions, primitives, and extensible building blocks for a highly technical platform, enabling other developers or builders to create robust applications easily.
A highly collaborative way of working with a heavy emphasis on teamwork and leading through influence; you empower teams to deliver the best solutions to problems and opportunities.
Demonstrable experience working with a technical team with a highly technical product or service within its core responsibilities.
A self-starting attitude: you enjoy managing your own time and work, within a high trust and high accountability, but high-support environment. You proactively drive your own personal development and stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and challenges.
Bonus points for:
Community contributions through meet-up/conference talks, blogs, or open-source Insurtech or fintech experience.
Experience in data science and/or actuarial science.
