About the Role:

At Gusto, we're on a mission to serve the financial needs of the American middle class — particularly the millions of hourly, W-2 workers who rely on every paycheck. Our team builds consumer-facing financial services that meet these workers where they are: cash-flow sensitive, mobile-first, and often underserved by traditional banks.

As a technical lead, you'll play a pivotal role at the heart of this effort—scaling financial tools that help our members navigate real-life financial challenges like paycheck gaps, savings shortfalls, and credit access. From earned wage access to credit-building programs, merchant-funded savings, and direct deposit incentives, you'll help us turn paychecks into a financial foundation.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

Build products & services and scale the platform that powers consumer money at Gusto
Mentor and provide guidance to software engineers, fostering their growth and development
Take ownership of projects, ensuring they meet high standards of quality and performance
Collaborate on complex and ambiguous problems with partnerships from Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Compliance, Operations, and other cross-functional teams
Engage in a highly supportive environment working with others to drive productivity and innovation
Help drive the product development process from concept to launch

Here’s what we're looking for:

12+ years of professional software development experience
Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and working with quick iteration cycles
Experience architecting, building, and testing large-scale and resilient distributed systems and/or software platforms
Experience as a technical lead, overseeing the work of multiple engineers and multiple teams on multi-quarter projects
Experience mentoring senior engineers and upleveling engineering culture and practices
Ability to communicate technical complexity and help facilitate informed tradeoffs
Willingness to collaborate across different functions
An aptitude and interest in bringing clarity and simplicity to complex and ambiguous problems
Nice, but not required:
Experience in the Fintech industry building scalable backend systems to power financial services and products
React, Typescript, GraphQL, Ruby/Ruby on Rails

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $223,160-$275,950/yr for San Francisco & New York. $189,475-$230,563/yr in Denver & most remote locations, Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
