About the Team
OpenAI Finance is responsible for ensuring the organization is set up for success in pursuit of its mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
Within Finance, the Technical Revenue Accounting team acts as a strategic partner to Product, Growth, Legal, Deal Desk, and GTM teams. We evaluate the revenue impact of new product offerings, self-serve monetization models, and complex enterprise contracts. We ensure compliance with ASC 606 while enabling rapid growth, automation, and operational excellence. As trusted advisors, we shape product and contract design, build revenue recognition policies, and refine systems to improve accuracy, efficiency, and audit readiness.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Director of Technical Revenue to lead product and monetization advisory, oversee revenue recognition for our growing professional services portfolio, and drive automation and scalability across revenue processes.
Reporting to the Head of Technical Revenue, you’ll have a high-impact role at the intersection of cutting-edge AI products, complex multi-element arrangements, and revenue strategy. You will help shape how OpenAI monetizes its innovations while building the frameworks and systems that will scale with our growth.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Shape revenue strategy as the primary revenue advisor for self-serve product and pricing changes, including new launches, credit-based pricing, and usage-based models.
Lead revenue recognition for custom professional services offerings, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and scalability as the business grows.
Partner closely with Growth, GTM, Legal, and Deal Desk to proactively evaluate revenue implications during product development, pricing changes, and contract negotiations.
Draft and maintain technical accounting memos and policies to document positions on complex arrangements under ASC 606.
Collaborate with Finance Systems and Engineering teams to drive automation initiatives for contract intake, SSP allocation, and revenue reporting.
Partner with the Head of Technical Revenue to define long-term priorities for revenue automation and improvements to processes and controls.
Mentor and guide the technical revenue team, elevating the team’s ability to proactively influence product and contract decisions.
You might thrive in this role if you have:
12+ years of technical revenue accounting experience, with deep expertise in ASC 606 for SaaS, consumption-based, and professional services arrangements.
Proven experience advising Product and GTM teams on pricing, monetization strategies, and revenue recognition implications.
Strong contract review experience, including multi-element arrangements, milestone-based SOWs, and credit/usage models.
Familiarity with order-to-cash workflows and revenue automation tools (e.g., Oracle Fusion, NetSuite ARM, RevPro, Salesforce CPQ).
Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex accounting guidance into practical advice for non-accounting teams.
CPA, Big 4, or audit background strongly preferred, with a mix of tech industry experience and accounting advisory expertise for complex revenue environments.
