Engineering at hyperexponential
At hyperexponential (hx) we are transforming the traditional insurance industry with our groundbreaking SaaS platform, hx Renew. Insurers use it to build complex mathematical models that enable smarter, faster pricing decisions - whether it’s calculating the cost to insure a global superstar’s concert tour or protecting entire states from natural disasters.
Within hx Renew, users can rapidly develop and iterate pricing models in Python and React within a modern software environment, free from the burden of legacy tech. What once took months now takes weeks or even days. This agility has made our product the go-to platform for insurers worldwide.
Our engineering team - made up of some of the brightest (and kindest!) minds in the industry - pushes technological boundaries every day through creative innovation and regular hackathons.
hxAI
Our mission is bold: to redefine how the insurance industry builds software and makes decisions, powered by generative AI. You'll be joining one of only six companies globally positioned to define how AI transforms software development - alongside Cursor, GitHub, and AWS. While they're building general-purpose AI coding assistants, we're creating something unprecedented: the world's first domain-specific AI peer-programmer for enterprise insurance.
Your Mission
As a Staff Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping our technical future - you will plan a pivotal role in leading architectural evolution, amplifying engineering excellence, and solving complex challenges that come with scale and expansion.
This is a high-impact role, where you won’t be tied to a single team. Instead, you’ll work across domains, systems, and initiatives - from tackling platform-wide scalability challenges and setting patterns for AI integration, to unlocking new capabilities for emerging markets and customer segments.
You’ll collaborate closely with Principal Engineers, EMs, PMs, and cross-functional Tiger Teams - short-term, high-leverage groups focused on accelerating progress where it matters most. Your work will directly influence our technical strategy, enhance engineering practices, and ensure we build resilient, scalable systems that support our next phases of growth. You’ll take ideas from napkin sketch to production-grade systems that redefine what’s possible in specialty insurance.
This role is for you if you:
See beyond your code - you think in systems, products, and long-term sustainability
Thrive in fast-moving environments and bring clarity to ambiguity
Get energy from working across multiple teams and projects
Know when to experiment and when to design for the long haul
Lead with influence and empathy - not just title
If you thrive on autonomy, are passionate about connecting the technical dots, and want to leave a lasting mark on a growing platform - we must meet!
What You’ll Be Doing
Drive high-impact initiatives. Lead cross-cutting engineering efforts - especially in early-stage or ambiguous projects - by setting direction, fostering alignment, and helping teams move fast with confidence.
Shape our technical future. Contribute to the evolution of our Engineering Vision, identifying opportunities to raise the bar on quality, sustainability, and long-term impact.
Partner deeply across teams. Work closely with Engineering Managers and Product Managers to support, motivate, and empower teams building secure, scalable, high-performing software.
Guide architectural decisions. Consult on system designs, offer technical leadership, and help teams anticipate and navigate future technical challenges.
Elevate engineering practices. Champion what works - scaling local wins into org-wide standards that improve velocity, reliability, and developer experience.
Build trust and alignment. Develop strong relationships across the business, clearly communicating technical concepts and helping stakeholders align on priorities and outcomes.
Lead in moments that matter. Be a calm, decisive voice during high-stakes incidents, helping teams stay unblocked and keeping critical initiatives on track.
Grow the culture. Mentor engineers, contribute to talent development, and help shape a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning across hx.
What We're Looking For
A builder at heart. You care about delivering real impact - not just elegant code - and you bring a sharp eye for balancing long-term sustainability with immediate business needs.
Depth in cloud and distributed systems. You’ve designed and built scalable, secure, and reliable cloud-based architectures - and you know what it takes to evolve them under real-world pressure.
Architectural thinking. You can evaluate and design complex systems, zooming out to see the big picture while sweating the critical details.
Self-directed and proactive. You don’t wait for direction - you spot high-value opportunities, take ownership, and follow through with focus and clarity.
A technical leader and influencer. You’ve led initiatives that span teams and functions, aligning people on tools, technologies, and engineering practices that move the business forward.
Versatile and curious. You bring deep experience across multiple languages, frameworks, and technologies - and you love picking up new ones when the problem calls for it.
Our stack cover multiple technologies like Python, Kotlin, Rust, Typescript, React, AWS and more.
An excellent communicator. You translate complex technical ideas into clear, accessible language for a range of audiences - whether in a doc, a whiteboard session, or an exec update.
Skilled at stakeholder alignment. You build trust, manage expectations, and connect technical strategy with business goals - all while keeping momentum.
Strategic contributor. You’ve helped define and evolve long-term technical vision, and you're energized by shaping what comes next.
Documentation advocate. You know great systems are supported by great docs - and you’re thoughtful about writing for both present and future engineers.
