PagerDuty is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead one of our customer-focused and high-performing teams within our Incident Management group!
As an Engineering Manager of Chat Experience, you will be responsible for managing a team of software engineers who own and evolve PagerDuty’s chat-based collaboration experiences. You’ll partner closely with Product Management and Design to deliver intuitive, real-time chat workflows that help customers collaborate during incidents and day-to-day operations, ensuring the engineering execution matches the product vision for a world-class chat experience. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a strong team that is shaping how modern teams communicate and take action inside PagerDuty. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering and management background, along with a passion for user experience.
This role is based in Lisbon, Portugal and is expected to come into the Lisbon office 1 day month as part of PagerDuty’s hybrid work model, so you can thrive in your new role and fully embrace being a Dutonian!
Key Responsibilities
- Partner closely with Product Management and senior engineers to create a vision and roadmap for chat experience.
- Work with Engineering, Product, and UX stakeholders to deliver seamless, user-friendly chat features.
- Champion simplicity and usability in the chat experience by working hand-in-hand with UX to translate customer needs into reliable, scalable engineering solutions.
- Interact with internal engineering teams to resolve dependencies and integrate chat workflows across the PagerDuty platform.
- Make pragmatic trade-off decisions on resourcing and priority.
- Collaborate with other engineering leaders at PagerDuty on cross-team initiatives, both cultural and technical.
- Measure impact by partnering with Product and Design on defining success metrics for chat experience features and ensuring engineering delivery drives those outcomes.
- Support your team’s on-call rotation or incident command rotation, being available for escalations and production issues as they arise.
- Learn PagerDuty’s culture and values and be a strong proponent for them.
Basic Qualifications
- 8+ years of overall experience in Engineering
- 2+ years of Engineering Management in a SaaS organization
- Proven experience building user-facing web applications or similar
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on large-scale systems and/or messaging or collaboration platforms, with knowledge of common pitfalls in over/under-engineering
- Strong sense of urgency toward action, a customer-first philosophy, and ability to think and act strategically in close partnership with Product to shape the chat experience roadmap
- Ability to balance planning with execution
- Demonstrated ability to hire and develop engineers at varying levels of experience to help them reach their full potential
- Excellent communication skills across all levels of the organization, with an emphasis on providing context and empowering teams rather than prescribing solutions
- Technical depth to engage in design/code discussions when needed
- Clear perspective on what “good engineering” looks like, and when to empower teams versus step in on critical decisions
