Why This Job is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
Assured is building SaaS infrastructure for a traditionally manual, high-stakes workflow: insurance claims processing. Featuring a Staff Backend Engineer focused on Messaging highlights a common SaaS inflection point—when customer communication becomes a core platform capability rather than a product add-on, demanding reliable workflows, clear data models, and strong operational discipline.
The role stands out for the kind of platform experience it can create in a SaaS career: designing APIs and schemas that multiple product surfaces depend on, scaling high-volume systems, and tightening observability to keep reliability predictable as usage grows. It also touches a current SaaS frontier—production AI/LLM integrations—where engineering judgment around monitoring, iteration, and failure modes matters as much as model choice.
This position is best suited to an engineer who prefers end-to-end ownership of backend components and enjoys translating evolving product needs into durable primitives. It fits someone comfortable collaborating across product, infrastructure, and data, and who values work where correctness, auditability, and performance are first-order concerns in customer-facing communication systems.
The section above is editorial commentary from The SaaS Jobs, provided to help SaaS professionals understand the role in a broader industry context.
Job Description
Assured is on a mission to modernize insurance. Claims processing (i.e. should we pay this claim?), while often overlooked, is the foundation of the entire industry. It’s currently highly manual, involving phone calls, faxes, and gut instinct, costing tens of billions of dollars a year. We can do better.
At Assured, we provide large insurers with the software solutions they need to win in a modern, technology-driven world. From self-service claim-filing software to backend fraud detection, we’re the engine that powers claims processing for some of the largest insurers in the world.
The challenges we face are deep and diverse, from creating digital experiences that provide comfort and clarity to claimants at their most stressed and vulnerable to orchestrating large-scale ML-driven decision-making on billions of dollars of claims payments, life at Assured is dynamic, collaborative, and rewarding.
We’re looking for an experienced Staff Backend Engineer to help shape the future of Assured’s rapidly scaling Messaging platform. In this role, you’ll work on the core systems that power high-volume, high-reliability communication across our products, with a strong focus on backend architecture, APIs, data models, and production AI/LLM integrations.
You’ll own critical technical projects end-to-end, from system design and implementation to testing, deployment, and iteration, while helping ensure the platform scales reliably, securely, and efficiently. You’ll collaborate closely with product, infrastructure, and data partners to deliver new capabilities and continuously improve the systems our customers rely on every day.
This is a high-impact, hands-on role for someone who enjoys solving complex backend problems and building durable platform foundations.
What You’ll Do
🌎 Own major backend components of the Messaging platform, including business logic, APIs, data models, and supporting infrastructure.
👩💻 Design, build, test, and ship high-quality production code using TypeScript and GraphQL.
📨 Architect and implement scalable messaging workflows that handle growing volume, complexity, and new product use cases.
🧠 Build and maintain production-level AI/LLM integrations, including message orchestration, prompt execution, response handling, and system observability.
🗄️ Design and optimize Postgres schemas and queries to support messaging state, auditing, and performance at scale.
🔍 Implement modern testing, monitoring, and observability practices to improve reliability, performance, and developer velocity.
🏎️ Create reusable abstractions and internal tooling that enable faster and safer product development across the Messaging platform.
What You Bring
📅 8+ years of backend or full-stack engineering experience (SaaS experience strongly preferred).
🧑💻 Strong experience building backend services with TypeScript and GraphQL in production environments.
🗄️ Hands-on experience with relational databases, especially Postgres, including data modeling and performance tuning.
🧠 Experience shipping and operating AI/LLM-powered features in production, with an understanding of reliability, monitoring, and iteration.
📈 Proven success designing and scaling robust backend systems over time.
🧑🔬 Solid engineering fundamentals in distributed systems, APIs, and data modeling.
💬 A collaborative mindset and comfort partnering cross-functionally with product, infrastructure, and data teams.
