About the Role:
We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead Quizlet’s Trust & Safety engineering efforts, building the systems that protect learners, educators, and creators while enabling healthy, high-quality participation across our community.
In this role, you will lead teams responsible for moderation, abuse prevention, community integrity, and AI safety infrastructure, working closely with Trust & Safety, Legal, Policy, and Product partners to ensure Quizlet remains a safe, trusted place for learning at global scale.
We’re happy to share that this is an onsite position in our San Francisco office. To help foster team collaboration, we require that employees be in the office a minimum of three days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and as needed by your manager or the company. In this role, you will:- Lead and grow engineering teams responsible for trust & safety systems, including content moderation, abuse and fraud detection, and enforcement workflows
- Design and scale proactive safety mechanisms, including automated detection, risk scoring, and policy-driven enforcement
- Build tools and platforms that support human-in-the-loop moderation, appeals, and case management
- Establish engineering best practices for reliability, auditability, and explainability in safety systems
- Design and evolve community integrity and contribution quality systems that promote safe, constructive participation
- Build reputation, signaling, and feedback mechanisms that help surface high-quality content and interactions while reducing harmful behavior
- Partner with Product to shape community experiences that encourage positive engagement and discourage abuse at scale
- Strengthen safety capabilities for AI-generated and AI-assisted content, including detection, labeling, and transparency mechanisms
- Build safeguards to prevent misuse of AI features, including prompt abuse, policy evasion, and automated spam or manipulation
- Support content authenticity, provenance, and policy enforcement for AI-powered learning experiences
- Partner closely with Trust & Safety Operations, Legal, Policy, Privacy, and Security teams to translate policies into scalable technical systems
- Ensure safety systems support privacy, consent, and regulatory compliance across regions
- Contribute to incident response, postmortems, and continuous improvement of Quizlet’s safety posture
What you bring to the table:- 12+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years managing and scaling engineering teams
- Proven experience leading Trust & Safety, Integrity, or Platform Safety engineering teams in a production environment
- Strong people leadership skills, including coaching senior engineers, technical leads, and emerging managers
- Experience owning execution for complex, cross-functional initiatives in partnership with Product and Operations teams
- Hands-on experience building or operating content moderation, abuse prevention, fraud detection, or enforcement systems
- Strong understanding of policy-driven enforcement, escalation, and appeals workflows
- Experience designing systems that support human-in-the-loop moderation and Trust & Safety Operations at scale
- Familiarity with global trust & safety challenges, including harassment, spam, manipulation, and misuse
- Strong background in distributed systems, data pipelines, and service-oriented architectures
- Experience with ML-assisted safety systems, rule-based detection, or risk scoring frameworks
- Ability to design systems with reliability, auditability, and explainability as first-class concerns
- Experience supporting incident response, on-call rotations, and postmortem-driven improvement
- Experience building or supporting safeguards for AI-generated or AI-assisted content
- Understanding of risks related to prompt abuse, policy evasion, automation, and content manipulation
- Familiarity with content authenticity, labeling, or provenance mechanisms is a strong plus
- Ability to balance rapid AI innovation with responsible deployment and user protection
- Proven ability to partner closely with Trust & Safety Operations, Legal, Policy, Privacy, and Security teams
- Strong communication skills for translating policy and risk requirements into technical execution
- Sound judgment and calm decision-making in high-stakes or ambiguous situations

Total compensation for this role is market competitive, including a starting base salary of $235,781 - $311,070. The total compensation is dependent on location and experience, as well as company stock options
