Why This Job is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
This Senior Data Scientist role sits at the intersection of SaaS product analytics and internal platform strategy, focused on developer experience rather than end-user consumer behavior. The work centers on Backstage and Spotify Portal, where an open-source foundation is paired with a commercial SaaS offering—an increasingly common pattern for infrastructure products. That context makes measurement and decision-making especially nuanced, because “success” spans adoption, engagement, and long-term value across varied customer environments.
For a SaaS career, the role offers durable leverage: defining core metrics, shaping experimentation, and translating usage data into product direction alongside Product, Design, Research, and Engineering. Experience in this kind of platform domain tends to transfer across B2B SaaS, DevTools, and data-informed product organizations, where influence depends as much on judgment and framing as on statistical technique. It also builds fluency in how SaaS products evolve through lifecycle stages, from early signals to mature optimization.
This position fits data scientists who prefer close partnership with product leadership and are comfortable being opinionated about measurement trade-offs. It will suit professionals who enjoy ambiguous problem spaces, stakeholder communication, and turning telemetry into practical roadmap decisions, particularly in developer-facing SaaS and platform ecosystems.

Job Description

Spanning many disciplines, we work to make the business work; creating the infrastructure, tooling, frameworks, and capabilities needed to welcome a billion customers.
Backstage was born at Spotify to address the challenges of scaling engineering organizations and has since evolved into a leading open source and SaaS platform for building developer portals. Alongside our widely adopted open-source platform, Spotify now offers Portal—our commercial SaaS product—helping companies reduce cognitive load and scale their R&D organizations.
This role sits within PDX Insights, the data science team supporting Platform Developer Experience. We partner closely with Product, User Research, Design and Engineering to help guide the evolution of Backstage and Portal through data-informed decision making.
