Why This Job is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
AI is increasingly becoming part of the core product surface in established SaaS platforms, not a side project. This Staff AI Engineer role stands out because it is positioned at the intersection of customer-facing intelligence and the underlying platform capabilities that make those features reliable in production, including orchestration, retrieval, evaluation, and context management. That combination reflects where much of the SaaS ecosystem is heading as teams move from demos to durable, embedded AI.
For a long-term SaaS career, the work maps to high-leverage problems that recur across products and companies: turning ambiguous workflows into shipped capabilities, building reusable primitives that other engineers can safely extend, and making pragmatic build versus buy decisions as the AI tooling landscape shifts. The emphasis on measurable usage and internal enablement also mirrors how mature SaaS organizations scale new technical paradigms without fragmenting the product.
This role fits someone who enjoys pairing systems depth with product judgment, and who is comfortable influencing technical direction while still writing and shipping code. It will suit engineers motivated by cross-functional collaboration and by improving how an entire product organization builds, rather than optimizing a single model in isolation.
The section above is editorial commentary from The SaaS Jobs, provided to help SaaS professionals understand the role in a broader industry context.
Job Description
About the Role
We're looking for a Staff AI Engineer to help advance Amplitude's AI products and the foundations they're built on. As AI reshapes how customers analyze data, build products, and act on insights, we need engineers who can move fluidly between deep technical work and product judgment, shipping AI capabilities that customers and internal teams actually rely on.
This role is both visionary and hands-on. You'll identify where AI creates the most leverage, build the systems that deliver it, and establish the patterns that let the rest of the company build faster on top of your work. You'll contribute to customer-facing AI products, the platform infrastructure beneath them, and the internal tooling that helps Amplitude operate as an AI-native company.
What You'll Do
- Ship high-impact AI features and products that change how customers and internal teams work, from agentic workflows to embedded intelligence across the Amplitude platform
- Design and build the foundational infrastructure behind Amplitude's AI systems: orchestration, evaluation, retrieval, context management, and integrations with the broader product ecosystem
- Identify high-leverage opportunities by deeply understanding user workflows, customer pain points, and emerging capabilities in the AI ecosystem
- Establish reusable patterns, primitives, and components that enable other engineers to build AI features confidently and consistently
- Drive adoption and quality through close collaboration with product, design, and customer-facing teams, with a relentless focus on real usage and measurable outcomes
- Set technical direction for AI systems at Amplitude, making thoughtful build vs. buy calls, shaping evaluation strategy, and influencing the long-term roadmap
Who You Are
You're a highly capable engineer with a strong track record of shipping AI-powered systems that people actually use. You bring deep technical instincts, strong product sense, and a forward-thinking view of where AI is heading.
Experience & Skills
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years building production LLM or applied AI systems
- Experience designing and scaling AI products, platforms, or developer tools with real users and real reliability constraints
- Deep familiarity with the modern AI ecosystem: model APIs, agent frameworks, evals, retrieval, prompting, tool use, and the tradeoffs between them
- Strong product sense and systems thinking; you know when to prototype, when to harden, and when to invest in durable infrastructure
- Excellent communicator and collaborator, able to drive alignment across engineering, design, product, and go-to-market
How You Think & Work
- Leverage mindset: You see AI as a way to reshape how teams and customers think, plan, and execute, not just a feature to bolt on
- Context is key: You understand that AI is most powerful when grounded in real data, workflows, and decisions
- Vision leads utility: You listen closely to users and customers, but you also anticipate their needs and lead with creative, forward-looking solutions
- Build to learn: You favor fast iteration, usage-based validation, and continuous improvement over upfront perfection
What Sets You Apart
- Highest-leverage problem identification: You consistently spot the highest-value opportunities and use data to focus effort where it matters most
- Systems thinking: You see across disparate tools, data sources, and teams, and connect them into cohesive, contextual AI-powered experiences
- Hands-on design and implementation of agentic systems: You design and ship robust agentic workflows with strong context handling, orchestration, tool use, and evaluation
- Build vs. buy judgment: You know when to adopt existing solutions and when to build from scratch
- Driving adoption & evangelism: You get capabilities into users' hands, onboard them effectively, and evolve based on feedback
- Product thinking: You blend technical execution with product intuition to build AI experiences that people genuinely love to use
