Overview
Splitwise is looking for a Server Engineering Manager to lead Pro Growth – the team responsible for Splitwise Pro, our paid subscription product. The Pro Growth team works to improve both the feature set and conversion rate of Splitwise Pro, with a very direct impact on Splitwise's company growth and the happiness of its most dedicated users. Through frequent experimentation and iteration, you'll build valuable advanced features for our customers, optimize our Pro subscription revenue, and drive Splitwise forward on our journey to 100 million+ users.
We believe that small groups of dedicated people can build great software AND maintain an excellent work-life balance at the same time. ("It's a marathon, not a sprint," we often say.) We have a small hybrid HQ in Providence, RI, but most of us work remotely, with 2-3 large off-site gatherings each year. We reward high levels of ownership, and believe that psychological safety enables people to work through challenges and do their best work. As a manager, we'll need your help to maintain that culture and to welcome new people into it, striving to make both Splitwise-the-app and Splitwise-the-company the best that they can be.
You'll directly manage a team of 3 Ruby on Rails engineers, with potential to grow further in 2026. You will be both a people manager and a technical consultant, providing not only advice and mentorship, but also architectural guidance and occasional pull requests. On the Pro Growth team, you'll collaborate closely with a PM, designer, data scientist, and mobile engineers, and occasionally work with our Core Platform and Payments teams on projects that span multiple areas of our app.
This role reports to our CTO, Ryan – who is also the current engineering manager for Pro Growth. He looks forward to helping you settle into the position! 🙂
What you'll actually do at Splitwise:
- Improve the feature set and conversion rate of Splitwise Pro, our paid subscription product
- Manage and mentor a team of 3 ICs, on both a personal level and a technical level
- Collaborate closely with a PM, designer, data scientist, and mobile engineers
- Run check-in meetings, and broadcast out important updates to leadership and to the wider Splitwise team
- Identify opportunities to improve code quality, pay down tech debt, and streamline future development
- Directly write and review code, especially when it helps your team see a clearer path towards accomplishing a task
- Launch and resolve many A/B tests, rapidly iterating on Pro upsells, feature improvements, and other changes
- Make tactical suggestions for adjusting project scopes and specs, to maximize impact and minimize time + effort
- Juggle the execution of current projects and the planning of prospective future ones
- In the future, act as a hiring manager to help grow your team
Things about you:
- You treat others with empathy and respect, and foster psychological safety that enables everyone to do their best work
- You communicate well about technical issues, both with fellow engineers and with PMs, designers, and data scientists
- You're familiar with Ruby on Rails, and/or happy to grow your Ruby skills. (We don’t require prior Ruby experience, but we will ask you to write Ruby code as part of your interview process.)
- You like running experiments and learning from their results, and feel comfortable dissecting a spreadsheet full of data with your peers
- You have experience organizing and executing large technical projects, including people management
- You take responsibility for shipping updates quickly and consistently, while ensuring a codebase remains well-structured and maintainable
- You have a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related degree, or equivalent
- You have 8+ years of experience in engineering, and 1+ year of experience as an engineering manager or tech lead
- We value but do not require past experience with: large consumer-facing apps, building mobile APIs, Ruby on Rails, front-end HTML + CSS, subscription infrastructure (Stripe + iOS App Store + Google Play), statistics
Things you’ll learn:
- How we rigorously interrogate split test results and statistics
- How we monetize a freemium app respectfully, without alienating a core userbase of free users
- How we build and rebuild features and APIs to support millions of additional users
- How a small, transparent start-up operates
Compensation range:
- $201,000 - $226,000/yr base cash compensation
- Depends on experience level and tenure
Benefits:
- Competitive base salary
- Equity/stock options
- Top-tier health care (covered 100% for you, 50% for dependents)
- Dental and Vision insurance
- Unlimited/flexible PTO (most employees take 4-6 weeks)
- Paid parental leave (12+ weeks)
- 401k with match
- Flexible hours (with meeting hours generally from 10am-5pm ET)
- Professional development budget for conferences or other paid resources, in consultation with your manager
- Periodic annual retreats and face-to-face visits with colleagues
- Support for in-office, co-working, or remote work, each with related benefits to do your best work
