About the team:
OpenAI didn’t begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood, as it leaves the lab and meets the world.
This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it’s unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told, in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning
About the Role
OpenAI is seeking a Social Creative Director to join our in-house Creative Studio team. In this role, you’ll concept, craft, and lead social-first creative across channels—building work that shapes culture, educates users, and deepens trust in our brand. You’ll partner closely with Marketing, Comms, Product, and cross-functional creative pods to translate product launches, research breakthroughs, and big cultural moments into work that feels unmistakably “OpenAI."
You’ll lead ideas from zero → one, elevate craft, and help define how OpenAI shows up on social platforms. This role blends big thinking with hands-on making: part creative director, part storyteller, part social strategist, part editor.
In this role you will:
Lead concept development and execution for social-first activations across Instagram, X, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts, and emerging platforms.
Craft breakthrough storytelling around launches, model releases, research updates, product features, and cultural moments.
Partner closely with Product Marketing, Comms, and Creative Leadership to develop integrated creative ideas that ladder up to larger brand initiatives.
Direct briefs, oversee and create storyboards, scripts, edits, and visual references to push ideas forward quickly.
Guide and mentor designers, motion artists, editors, and writers.
Identify and define OpenAI’s visual language and editorial voice for social, ensuring consistency and quality across channels.
Direct shoots and content capture when needed—lightweight to high-end.
Prototype ideas rapidly (lo-fi and hi-fi) using AI tools, Figma, motion tools, and in-app editing.
Monitor social trends, formats, and platform behaviors, and translate them into relevant creative opportunities for the brand.
Collaborate with external partners, creators, and agencies when needed.
Understand product deeply—becoming fluent in model capabilities and user behaviors to craft content that’s not just trendy, but genuinely helpful and educational.
Set a high craft bar for everything we ship.
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have 8+ years experience in social creative, content creation, or creative direction at a top brand, in-house creative team, or creative agency.
Have a portfolio that demonstrates social-first thinking, storytelling craft, and a strong aesthetic point of view.
Have deep fluency across major platforms—knowing what works, why it works, and how to evolve it.
Have the ability to move fast: take a spark of an idea and turn it into something tangible within hours or days.
Have strong writing and visual communication skills (storytelling, scripting, framing, copy).
Have experience directing talent, creators, or small editorial or production crews.
Have the ability to brief and manage motion designers, editors, and designers.
Are comfortable working with technical or complex concepts—and making them simple and compelling.
Have High EQ: excellent collaborator, low-ego, thrives in ambiguous environments.
Are excited about using AI tools as an extension of your creative process.
Have experience on product, tech, or culture-driving brands.
Nice to Have:
Experience building social systems or brand voice guidelines.
Hands-on motion or editing skills.
Experience with rapid content creation around live events, launches, or cultural moments.
Experience managing creators or creator partnerships.
Interest in innovation, emerging formats, experimental storytelling, and pushing the frontier of how brands show up online.
