About the Team
The Financial Engineering team at OpenAI is responsible for building the billing infrastructure and data foundation that powers pricing, subscriptions, and revenue analytics across all of OpenAI’s products. This team collaborates cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, Product, and Engineering to ensure accurate and scalable financial data systems. As OpenAI expands its commercial footprint, the demand for trustworthy and audit-ready financial data grows in tandem—this is where you come in.
About the Role
We’re looking for a data engineer to join our Data Engineering group and lead the development of core financial data pipelines and models. This role is focused on building trustworthy, granular datasets that support billing systems, product pricing, financial reconciliations, and business-critical metrics like revenue and bookings. You will serve as a foundational partner to the Finance, Accounting, and Product teams by ensuring data completeness, auditability, and alignment with financial reporting standards.
This role requires a strong background in data engineering, plus experience working with financial systems, billing workflows, or reporting infrastructures. You’ll help us reimagine and build data pipelines across a modern, multi-vendor billing stack while maintaining precision and compliance at scale.
In this role, you will:
Build robust data pipelines and ETL workflows that integrate data from internal billing systems and third-party vendors (e.g., payment processors), transforming raw events into structured, finance-grade datasets.
Develop unified offline billing models to support product analytics, cash flow tracking, and financial performance reporting.
Design and evolve schemas that power internal tools and external integrations, ensuring compatibility with accounting and compliance requirements.
Implement validation and reconciliation frameworks to guarantee consistency between internal systems and external platforms (e.g., invoice data vs. processed payments).
Partner closely with Finance and Accounting teams to produce reliable data inputs for month-end close, revenue analytics, and key financial metrics like ARR.
Support pricing analytics by delivering clean datasets that link compute usage, product configurations, and customer billing.
Drive alignment across engineering, data science, and finance to ensure that internal billing pipelines support future needs around audits, SOX compliance, and multi-processor support.
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have 8+ years of experience in data engineering, including hands-on work in financial data environments (e.g., billing, ERP, payments, or accounting systems).
Have worked with financial data that feeds into downstream systems like Netsuite, Stripe, or other billing and finance tools.
Are comfortable building pipelines using tools like Airflow, Spark, or DBT, and writing clean, testable SQL and Python code.
Have a deep appreciation for data modeling, data correctness, integrity, and traceability, especially in regulated environments.
Understand common patterns in financial reconciliation, anomaly detection, and structured data modeling.
Enjoy partnering with Finance and Engineering stakeholders to translate operational requirements into clean, auditable datasets.
