The Role:
We’re looking for a hands-on Software Engineer with an AI focus to join a new team we are incubating to be based in Toronto. In this founding engineer role, you’ll work closely with product managers, data scientists, and other engineers in both the U.S. and India to design, build, and ship the next generation of AI-powered commerce solutions, including Ally and OCC.
Why this role matters
- Impact from day one: Join a small, high-impact U.S. team working on CommerceIQ’s newest AI-driven offerings.
- Hands-on AI development: Build and deploy real AI tools, not just consume pre-built services.
- Global exposure: Collaborate with a talented, distributed engineering organization serving the world’s largest brands.
Location / Travel:
This is a remote role based out of Toronto. Please note that we are only considering candidates located in the Toronto area for this role.
What You'll Do:
- Design & build features: Develop scalable backend services (Java preferred; Python also welcome) and contribute to full-stack features, collaborating with cross-functional teams to bring AI-powered capabilities to market.
- Work with AI at the code level: Write code that integrates and deploys AI models (including LLM APIs), focusing on building tools that deliver real-time insights to users.
- Collaborate globally: Partner daily with our Bangalore-based engineering team to align on architecture, code quality, and delivery.
- Drive technical quality: Contribute to design discussions, code reviews, and best-practice adoption for performance, security, and maintainability.
- Own end-to-end delivery: Take features from design through deployment, ensuring they meet business requirements and user needs.
What You'll Bring:
- 3-5 years of hands-on software engineering experience building backend services and/or full-stack applications.
- Proficiency in Java or a similar JVM language; strong Python skills and familiarity with AI/ML frameworks are a plus.
- Experience developing and deploying AI-powered applications, including integrating with LLM APIs.
- Knowledge of cloud-native architectures (AWS/GCP/Azure), microservices, event-driven systems, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across time zones.
- Startup mindset; comfortable working in a fast-moving environment and wearing multiple hats.
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
