Why This Job is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
Quality engineering roles in cloud-native SaaS become leverage points when the product runs on distributed systems at scale. This SDET position sits in that reality, supporting an observability and security analytics platform built on microservices in AWS and operating across regions with high query and ingestion volumes. The remit is less about manual validation and more about the engineering systems that keep releases reliable when the underlying platform is constantly evolving.
For a SaaS career path, the work aligns with modern delivery patterns that recur across product companies: shift-left testing, CI/CD integration, and building reusable automation frameworks that multiple teams depend on. Experience gained here tends to translate well to other SaaS environments where reliability, deployment confidence, and test strategy directly influence customer trust. The emphasis on improving the test pyramid and embedding testability into design reviews also supports long-term growth into platform quality, developer productivity, or release engineering tracks.
This role is best suited to early-career engineers who prefer coding-centric quality work and enjoy collaborating across development and QE groups. It will fit someone motivated by systems thinking, incremental tooling improvements, and learning how SaaS teams operationalize quality in microservice architectures rather than focusing on feature delivery alone.
The section above is editorial commentary from The SaaS Jobs, provided to help SaaS professionals understand the role in a broader industry context.
Job Description
Sumo Logic is a cloud-native SaaS data analytics platform that solves complex observability and security problems. Customers choose our product because it allows them to easily monitor, optimize, and secure their applications, systems, and infrastructures. Our microservices architecture hosted on AWS ingests petabytes of data daily across many geographic regions. Millions of queries a day analyze hundreds of petabytes of data.
What can you expect to do?
As a Software Engineer in this team, you’ll work on building automation frameworks, tools, and systems that help developers and QE teams test faster and deliver with confidence. You’ll collaborate with engineers across teams to embed testing early in the lifecycle, improve automation coverage, and enhance overall product quality.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about coding, automation, and solving technical problems that improve developer and product efficiency.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Develop scalable tools, frameworks, or platforms that enable shift-left testing and automation across teams.
- Collaborate with development and QE teams to identify opportunities to automate test scenarios and validation workflows.
- Work on CI/CD pipeline integrations and improve automation reliability and efficiency.
- Write clean, maintainable, and reusable code for testing and validation frameworks.
- Participate in design and code reviews to ensure testability and quality are built into every feature.
- Contribute to improving test pyramid balance (more unit/contract tests, fewer late-stage E2E dependencies).
- Learn and adapt to new tools, technologies, and frameworks related to automation and quality.
Requirements:
- 0-1 years of experience in software development, SDET, or automation engineering.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Go, or similar).
- Basic understanding of test automation concepts, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software development practices.
- Familiarity with unit, integration, and end-to-end testing approaches.
- Exposure to REST APIs, microservices, or distributed systems is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Enthusiasm for learning, innovation, and building scalable engineering solutions.
