Why This Job is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
This Senior Embedded Video Engineer role stands out in SaaS because it sits at the intersection of cloud software and edge hardware, where product value depends on reliable, low latency video delivery. Flock Safety’s platform approach and its connected device portfolio indicate a SaaS business extending beyond web apps into vertically integrated systems, with video performance becoming a core part of the customer experience.
For a long term SaaS career, the work maps to durable platform skills: building and operating real time pipelines, making trade offs between device constraints and cloud capabilities, and collaborating across application, hardware, and backend boundaries. The emphasis on architecture, performance optimisation, and production readiness translates well to other SaaS environments that run media, IoT, or data intensive workloads, where reliability and observability are product features.
This is best suited to engineers who prefer ownership over a clearly defined subsystem and who enjoy ambiguity that comes with new product lines. It will fit someone motivated by deep technical problem solving, cross functional planning, and being a recognised subject matter expert rather than staying within a single codebase or layer of the stack.
The section above is editorial commentary from The SaaS Jobs, provided to help SaaS professionals understand the role in a broader industry context.
Job Description
Who is Flock?
Flock Safety is the leading safety technology platform, helping communities thrive by taking a proactive approach to crime prevention and security. Our hardware and software suite connects cities, law enforcement, businesses, schools, and neighborhoods in a nationwide public-private safety network. Trusted by over 5,000 communities, 4,500 law enforcement agencies, and 1,000 businesses, Flock delivers real-time intelligence while prioritizing privacy and responsible innovation.
We’re a high-performance, low-ego team driven by urgency, collaboration, and bold thinking. Working at Flock means tackling big challenges, moving fast, and continuously improving. It’s intense but deeply rewarding for those who want to make an impact.
With nearly $700M in venture funding and a $7.5B valuation, we’re scaling intentionally and seeking top talent to help build the impossible. If you value teamwork, ownership, and solving tough problems, Flock could be the place for you.
The Opportunity
We are hiring to expand the capabilities of our Android Device Video team! As we grow, we are building out application-level support for a new generation of products, including recorded and live video solutions for Flock Safety’s drone and drone-dock infrastructure. You will act as the primary liaison and technical subject matter expert for video performance within the drone product line. This is a high-impact role where you will balance 75% new feature architecture and design in the Android Apps space with 25% cross-functional planning alongside Cloud and Hardware teams. No prior drone or avionics experience is required—we are looking for a world-class embedded video engineer who is excited to apply their expertise to a new, dynamic hardware category.
The Skillset
Strong proficiency in Java and C/C++.
Deep experience with Live Video on Embedded devices. You should be comfortable with low-latency streaming and performance optimization.
Experience with (or a strong desire to learn) Kotlin.
Ability to navigate transport protocols, container formats, and cloud streaming concepts (e.g., RTP, RTSP, WebRTC, KVS/IVS).
Demonstrated expertise in developing for custom Android hardware or resource-constrained embedded systems.
The ability to "power through" ambiguous requirements and communicate the trade-offs between product goals and engineering constraints.
Strong debugging skills on custom hardware and experience with architectural design and documentation (JIRA, Confluence, Git).
90 Days at Flock
We believe good days lead to good weeks, and good weeks lead to good months. Here is how you will integrate into the team:
The First 30 Days
Build relationships with the Hardware and Cloud teams and learn the specifics of Flock’s device portfolio and system architecture.
Understand the current scope of drone-related work, from immediate stability needs to long-term feature goals.
The First 60 Days
Establish yourself as the "go-to" person for video requirements within the Drone product team.
Begin implementing high-priority features for the multi-stream video pipeline, ensuring reliability across Drone and Drone Dock environments.
90 Days & Beyond
Successfully deliver one major video feature and lead cross-functional discussions on its implementation.
Contribute to multiple design discussions and participate in your first on-call period, becoming a core pillar of the Device Video team’s expansion.
