Why This Job is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
This Senior Product Manager remit sits in a core SaaS pressure point: keeping a usage heavy analytics platform economically efficient as scale increases. The emphasis on COGS, unit economics, and cloud cost drivers reflects how mature SaaS businesses protect margin while continuing to ship, particularly when data ingestion, storage, and query performance are central to the product’s value.
For a SaaS product career, platform efficiency work builds a durable toolkit that travels across categories. The role connects product strategy to operational levers like cost observability, infrastructure tradeoffs, and reliability targets, translating technical constraints into measurable outcomes. Exposure to FinOps and pricing adjacent thinking also strengthens the ability to reason about monetization mechanics and cost to serve, a capability increasingly expected in senior product leadership for cloud delivered products.
This role tends to fit product managers who prefer systems level problem solving over surface feature delivery, and who are comfortable operating with engineering and finance stakeholders in the same room. It also suits professionals who like metric driven prioritization, can navigate architectural discussions without being an engineer, and want ownership of outcomes that show up in both customer experience and business performance.
The section above is editorial commentary from The SaaS Jobs, provided to help SaaS professionals understand the role in a broader industry context.
Job Description
Senior Product Manager – Platform Efficiency & COGS
About the Role
As a Senior Product Manager for Platform Efficiency, you will drive continual “cost to value” alignment by delivering the product features and platform enhancements that ensure durable efficiency of scale. You will sit at the intersection of Product, Engineering, FinOps, and Pricing - responsible for the architectural efficiency and gross margin health of our global SaaS analytics platform.
Sumo Logic processes hundreds of terabytes of data daily. Your mission is to ensure that as we scale, our infrastructure costs stay lean and our platform remains a performant, competitive, and high-margin engine. You will own the strategy for optimizing data ingestion, storage, networking, and compute costs while simultaneously improving the platform’s performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- COGS Strategy & Roadmap: Own the end-to-end roadmap for platform efficiency. Identify, prioritize, and execute initiatives that reduce cost-to-serve without compromising customer experience or SLAs. Own product strategy to focus on customer margins across multiple Sumologic revenue products
- Infrastructure Optimization: Collaborate with Core Platform and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams to optimize resource allocation across Kubernetes, Kafka, and AWS services (S3, DynamoDB, EC2).
- Cost Observability: Partner with FinOps to ensure internal "Cost Observability" dashboards inform continual efficiency improvements. Use data to identify "hot spots" in our AWS/Cloud infrastructure and drive targeted architectural shifts.
- Product Improvement Lifecycle: Translate complex technical bottlenecks into actionable PRDs. Define "Definition of Done" for efficiency projects, focusing on metrics like Cost per GB Ingested and Cost of Query engine, CPU utilisation of engineering assemblies.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Coordinate across Finance, UX, and Engineering stakeholders to deliver cost optimized solutions that meet the needs of customers as well as the financial goals of the business. Clearly articulate the financial impacts of technical debt and infrastructure modernization to executive stakeholders.
- Vendor & Cloud Management: Work with cloud providers and 3rd party vendors to optimize licensing, reserved instances, and usage-based billing models.
What We’re Looking For
- Technical Depth: You have a solid understanding of cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, and microservices. Experience with AWS cost structures and FinOps principles is a major plus.
- Data-Driven Mindset: You are a power user of data analytics tools and have a strong hold on cost and numbers. You don’t just report data; you find the "why" behind the numbers to drive strategic pivots.
- SaaS Savvy: 5+ years of PM experience, ideally in a technical platform role within an Enterprise SaaS environment (Log Analytics, Observability, or Cybersecurity).
- Execution Focus: Proven track record of taking high-level efficiency goals and breaking them down into testable hypotheses and delivered features.
- Communication: Ability to explain the ROI of a "refactoring project" to a non-technical stakeholder just as clearly as you can discuss API rate-limiting with a Principal Engineer.
Pricing Knowledge: Experience with pricing, units of measure, and cost modeling.
Technical Toolkit (Nice to Have)
- Experience with Big Data technologies (Lucene, Parquet, Spark).
- Familiarity with billing and provisioning systems (e.g., Zuora).
- Understanding of OpenTelemetry (OTel) and its impact on data pipeline efficiency.
