### Why this Role is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
Amplitude sits in a mature corner of SaaS where product analytics is foundational, but the platform direction is shifting toward AI-native workflows. That combination makes the Head of Product Design remit unusually consequential: design is being asked to shape how agents and humans collaborate across multiple product surfaces, not just refine a single UI. In SaaS terms, this is platform design leadership at the intersection of data products, developer-adjacent tooling, and emerging AI interaction patterns.
For a design leader building a long-term SaaS career, the role offers exposure to the problems that recur in scaled B2B products: maintaining coherence across a suite, raising craft while shipping continuously, and translating customer complexity into usable workflows. The player-coach framing also signals a path that strengthens both leadership range and hands-on product judgment, which tends to transfer well across growth-stage and public SaaS environments.
The section above is editorial commentary from The SaaS Jobs, provided to help SaaS professionals understand the role in a broader industry context.
Job Description
Amplitude is moving fast, from product analytics to an AI-native platform with agents embedded across the product, used by over 4,700 companies. We are looking for a strong design leader with a builder mindset to lead a 15-person design team through the next phase of growth.
This is a player-coach role. You manage and grow the team. You also stay in the actual work: elevating quality through feedback, pairing with designers on the hardest UX puzzles, and asking the right questions to unlock the crux of the problem. You'll know every product surface well enough to raise its quality — even if you don't own any single one end-to-end.
Designers are embedded in autonomous pods and need to keep shipping fast. Maintaining speed without compromising on coherence and quality is the job. If that tension sounds like an exciting problem to solve rather than a contradiction to complain about, keep reading.
What you'll do
Build the team. Hire, grow, and retain a high-performing design team, identifying people who will thrive and raise the bar at Amplitude. Develop them through direct, specific feedback. Help someone who's stuck get moving again.
Set direction. Drive the design strategy for Amplitude's product suite: Core Amplitude, Statsig, and Wave (a proactive agent that helps teams build self-improving products). Help define how agents and humans work together in the same workflows.
Champion craft. Strong visual design builds trust, clarity, and delight in the era of AI. Lead by example, elevating the quality of the product through exceptional design execution.
Hold a high bar. AI makes it cheap to ship UI changes, which makes it easy for quality to erode quietly. Set a clear standard for what good looks like and enforce it without becoming an approval bottleneck.
Stay in production. You believe that “the design” is what ships. Code is the material that brings the design to life. Push on the details, the papercuts, the edge cases.
Speak for the customer. Show up in leadership conversations as the voice of the customer, pushing for solutions that genuinely serve their needs and reduce complexity.
What we're looking for
- You've managed senior, independent IC designers and earned their respect through product and craft judgment.
- You've shipped products that moved real customer and business metrics, fast.
- You've created (not inherited) structure inside of a messy, high-growth organization.
- You've shipped AI-native experiences and use AI tools in your own practice today (we'll ask what you built and what you learned).
- Your portfolio shows both systems-level thinking and pixel-level craft.
- Bonus: You’ve designed for both technical and non-technical users, and can hold that tension without compromising the experience for either.
- Bonus: Experience with Analytics, Experimentation, or Developer tools.
What this is not
- Not an executive role that manages up and delegates down. You're deep in the work.
- Not a pure IC role. You're accountable for a team of 15.
- Not design ops. Your job isn't to add rituals, templates, or governance.
- Not the approval committee. Pods keep moving; you create coherence without becoming the bottleneck.
