Why This Job is Featured on The SaaS Jobs
This Director of Tax role stands out in the SaaS ecosystem because it sits at the intersection of subscription business complexity and global expansion. A company operating across jurisdictions and preparing for public company expectations tends to face nuanced questions around indirect taxes, international structuring, and the tax implications of product-led scale. The remit signals a function being built with enterprise-grade governance in mind, rather than a narrow compliance-only mandate.
For SaaS professionals, owning the full tax lifecycle in an environment that partners closely with Finance, Legal, Treasury, and Corporate Development builds durable operating leverage. Experience with ASC 740, sales and use tax exposure, and transfer pricing becomes increasingly valuable as SaaS companies layer on international revenue, acquisitions, and evolving go-to-market models. The role also sharpens the ability to translate technical tax outcomes into planning, forecasting, and risk decisions that influence leadership priorities.
This position fits a tax leader who prefers designing systems and decision frameworks, not simply maintaining inherited processes. It will suit someone comfortable advising across functions, coordinating external auditors and vendors, and balancing precision with pragmatic execution. The scope aligns with candidates who want their tax expertise to be integral to how a SaaS company scales and prepares for the next stage.

Job Description
About the team/role
We're hiring a Director of Tax to build and lead Checkr's tax function. This is a high-impact role that owns the full tax lifecycle while serving as a strategic partner across the company on M&A, transfer pricing, and tax planning. You'll report to the Controller and partner closely with Legal, Accounting, FP&S, Treasury, and Corporate Development.
This is an ideal role for a tax leader who wants to shape a function rather than inherit one, and who is energized by the operational rigor and strategic complexity of preparing a growth company for life as a public company.
What you’ll do
- Own Checkr's global tax strategy across direct and indirect tax, including federal, state, local, and international jurisdictions, and build the function, team, and vendor ecosystem to support it
- Lead the quarterly and annual income tax provision, including documentation, disclosures
- Oversee all direct tax matters, including income tax compliance, transfer pricing, R&D credits, and tax attribute planning
- Own indirect tax strategy and compliance, including sales and use tax
- Partner with Corporate Development on M&A tax due diligence, deal structuring, entity rationalization and post-close integration
- Serve as the trusted tax advisor across Legal, Accounting, FP&S, and Treasury on entity structuring, ETR forecasting, cash tax planning and intercompany
- Prepare the tax function for public company readiness, including SOX-compliant processes
What you bring
- 12+ years of progressive tax experience, including a combination of Big 4 and in-house roles
- Deep expertise in U.S. federal and state income tax, ASC 740, and indirect tax compliance
- Experience leading the tax provision process end-to-end, including coordination with external auditors
- Demonstrated experience supporting or leading tax workstreams in M&A transactions
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, particularly with Legal, Accounting, and FP&A
- CPA, JD, or Master's in Taxation
- An A-player mindset with a strong bias for action: you raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, and take ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes.
